The church and the convent were built in 1341 by Armenian monks, who lived there until 1470. Archbishop Francesco Salviati assigned them in 1475 to the Servants of Mary, coming from the church of S. Andrea in Kinzica, demolished by the Florentines to build the New Citadel. The church was radically transformed at the end of the 18th century and re-consecrated in 1795 by Archbishop Angiolo Franceschi. After the restoration of 1920, it was completely destroyed (the lower late 14th century façade and the 18th century bell tower remained standing), together with the cloister and the convent, in the air bombing of 31 August 1943. Rebuilt on the project by the architects Pediconi and Paniconi in the forms it had taken in the 18th century.
