Over the centuries, the church has undergone various transformations, initially damaged by the Florentine occupation in 1406 and then rebuilt in 1477, enriching\u00a0itself with a trapezoidal cloister and assuming functions of hospitality for pilgrims and assistance to the poor. In the 17th century, the building underwent further work, in particular the embellishment in Baroque style, with the addition of elements such as \u201cpietra serena\u201d frames and a wooden ceiling inlaid with canvases depicting stories of Sant\u2019 Antonio. Finally, in 1684, the complex was converted into an orphanage by the will of Cosimo III.
